Located on the tops of low coastal cliffs, weighing up to at least 700tonnes, these boulder deposits are thought to have resulted from submarine slumping on the continental slope, local faulting, or asteroid impacts on the Indian Ocean off the Pilbara and Gascoyne coasts. Shifting visual scale from this coastline, to the micro, it’s ruggedness belies the delicacy of the flora and fauna life-forms living in the adjoining marine and shoreline habitats. But like the human inhabitants, often also astoundingly rugged, there is an innate resilience that parallels the delicacy and beauty of all the coastal life-forms. The Sunny series of glass vessels, highlights the ability of seagrasses to ‘grow their own sunscreen’ in the form of UV-blocking pigments. The purple colouring found on Seagrasses, particularly those growing in shallow waters, indicates the presence of the photoprotection, hence the use of speckled glass to anchor the colour palettes of these artworks. Seagrasses are amongst the most light sensitive plants on the planet so this light-blocking adaptation minimises photodamage and leaf maintenance costs. The conservation message associated with Sunny is to influence sunscreen purchasing choices to water-habitat safe brands. People are often unaware that sunscreens can contain a number of chemicals harmful to marine life, highly toxic to micro-organisms. Located on the tops of low coastal cliffs, weighing up to at least 700tonnes, these boulder deposits are thought to have resulted from submarine slumping on the continental slope, local faulting, or asteroid impacts on the Indian Ocean off the Pilbara and Gascoyne coasts. Shifting visual scale from this coastline, to the micro, it’s ruggedness belies the delicacy of the flora and fauna life-forms living in the adjoining marine and shoreline habitats. But like the human inhabitants, often also astoundingly rugged, there is an innate resilience that parallels the delicacy and beauty of all the coastal life-forms. The world renown Shark Bay seagrass meadows are sustained by occasional flooding of the two rivers, Gascoyne & Wooramel. This river gum leaf inspired artwork aims to remind us of the terrestrial connection between land & sea. The health of the seagrass meadows is significantly impacted by land clearing & grazing practices inland. Increased sediment in the river flooding can suffocate seagrass as much as it can deliver important nutrients. The Shark Bay Arts Council hosted the event with Malgana artists using glass as an art medium for the first time. The three dominant seagrass species represented are the Ribbonweed - Posidonia australis, the Wireweed – Amphibolis antarctica, and the Dugong or Paddleweed – Halophila ovalis.
